In 1944, during World War II, Major Max Vatan, a Canadian Intelligence Officer, on a mission in France, enlists the help of French Resistance fighter Marianne, and together they stop a German spy. Later, Marianne discovers that Max is actually the spy she's been searching for, leading to a complicated web of secrets and lies.
